Donegal, situated in the beautiful rugged mountain landscape of Ireland’s North West Wild Atlantic Way is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. This huge county’s supreme appeal lies in the natural beauty of its coast, with windswept peninsulas, precipitous cliffs and a host of golden beaches that rival any in Europe.

Various beautiful treks through the county will bring the visitor onto sites of monastic settlements, the Vikings and ancient forts of the Kings of Ulster. Travel with us and you will inevitably fall in love with the county of Donegal.

The history of Donegal is the true history of Ireland which still lives on in the language and traditions of this great county. With the Gaeltacht areas providing the best of the Irish language in conversation, storytelling, music and song.

Enjoy Donegal’s famous links golf courses or any of the watersports popular around the coast of the county like surfing and water-skiing. For the younger visitor there are a host of leading activity centres offering a range of activities and rides.

Slieve League

Slieve LeagueRising almost 2000 ft / 598 m from the Atlantic, Slieve League are one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and twice as high as the cliffs of Mohar, at the base of the cliffs is the Giants Desk and Chair. Up there on top of Sliabh Leig is an early Christian monastic site with the remains of Ade mc Bric’s chapel still to be seen, as are the ruins of the monks stone dwellings or bee hive huts as they are called. Take a walk across the “one man’s path” and there you will find a trig point, placed atop of an ancient structure of unknown origin. This is a sacred mountain, for over a thousand years there was a Christian pilgrimage, no doubt Sliabh League was a sacred mountain before the Christians arrived here. On Sliabh League they are not fenced in, but you need to have respect for our heritage as you would have for others.

The oldest surviving building here is said to be 400 years old. Indeed, the whole complex is an interesting reminder of a stage in the industrial development of this country which has now given way to a more sophisticated, but usually far less fascinating technology. The visitor to Newmills can experience the pleasure of seeing one of the largest waterwheels in Ireland in action as it drives the machinery of the corn mill.

Giants Causeway

Flanked between the wild North Atlantic Ocean and a landscape of dramatic cliffs, for centuries the Giant’s Causeway has inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it.

Inquiring minds have marvelled at the regularity of the stones’ shape and the vastness of their number. Science, of course, holds the answers to most of these questions but in the days before scientists there were storytellers.

Some of the structures in the area, having been subject to several million years of weathering, resemble objects, such as the Organ and Giant’s Boot structures. Other features include many reddish, weathered low columns known as Giants Eyes, created by the displacement of basalt boulders; the Shepherd’s Steps; the Honeycomb; the Giant’s Harp; the Chimney Stacks; the Giant’s Gate and the Camel’s Hump.
